The Story of Francois

Since the 1700s, Francois has endured changing tides and shifting times. Today, this small but determined outport remains deeply connected to its heritage and the waters that surround it.

Generations by the Sea

First settled in the 1700s, Francois developed as a fishing community closely connected to the waters that surround it. For generations, families made their living from the sheltered harbour and the rich fishing grounds along Newfoundland’s south coast, where largely ice-free waters allowed fishing throughout the year.

Like many Newfoundland outports, Francois experienced periods of both growth and challenge as the fishing industry evolved. Through changing times, the community remained deeply rooted in its traditions, culture, and connection to the ocean.

Despite these challenges, Francois has endured. Residents resisted government resettlement programs during the mid-20th century, choosing to remain in their home community. The question of resettlement resurfaced in 2013 and again in 2021, and on both occasions, the community voted to stay — a powerful testament to the strength, resilience, and deep-rooted connection of its people.

Did You Know?

There are no cars in town. Wooden and concrete boardwalks connect homes, wharves, and community buildings.

It was first settled in the 1700s. Generations of families built their lives around the sea, creating the strong outport culture you’ll still experience today.

Only about 50 people call Francois home. Small in size, the community is known for its big hospitality and warm welcomes.

Culture & Community

Francois is perhaps best known for its warm hospitality. Visitors are often greeted not as strangers, but as friends. Community gatherings — especially traditional kitchen parties — reflect Newfoundland’s enduring love of music, storytelling, and shared laughter.

Homemade bread, partridgeberry jam, and fresh-baked treats fill community halls during celebrations. Music ranges from traditional waltzes to classic favourites, and before long, nearly everyone is on the dance floor.

It is this spirit — humour, resilience, generosity, and music — that defines Francois as much as the landscape itself.

Festivals and seasonal events help bring the community together throughout the year in Francois.
