Pictures cannot capture the beauty of this place. It was magical. The highlight of our trip.

  • Ali R.

The beautiful scenery, the boardwalk leading up to the cemetery and a pond on top of the community were all very nice.

There’s a saying—there’s no place like home—and for me, that place is François.
It’s where the world slows down. Where the water is still, the air is quiet, and people truly see and care for one another. There’s a natural sense of respect, connection, and peace that isn’t forced—it simply exists.
François is the kind of place you don’t just visit—you feel. With no roads in or out, life moves to the rhythm of the sea, where quiet mornings, salt air, and close-knit hearts define each day. It’s a place where stories linger in the wind, and home isn’t just where you’re from—it’s who you are.
I’m proud to call Francois my home.

    Awesomeness!
Peace and tranquility just to slowly, very slowly walk around this part of paradise and listen, look, smell and hear!
Had rain when I arrived Sept 27, 2019 but it didn't dampen the feeling of being!
Next two days were sunny and warm.
Enjoyed the boat trip to/from Francois. HIgh winds and rain going and sunny day return.
Thanks to all for a great few days!
Big thanks to the Captain and crew of the ferry from Burgeo, Grey River and Francois and return.

Living there for the first 46 years of my life, my beautiful hometown has too many memories to mention. What I do know is the people. They are some of the best. I am sure anyone visiting will agree. While the community is tiny, the vestiges are huge. The hiking is second to none and the picturesque views will all be print worthy. I should be bias, but I don’t have to be when a visit will be one of the best experiences you will ever experience.

Though it has been quite some time now, I still remember how blown away I was by the beauty of this place. The hospitality of the locals is unmatched by other tourist spots, and you truly receive a wonderful NFLD experience in Francois. I believe we stayed at Greene's place which is still listed as a rental, and the accommodation was perfect.

The people were absolutely amazing & welcomed me whole heartedly . The hikes were stunning and scenery around the community were beautiful. A trip that anyone visiting NL should experience.

Met relatives Kathleen ,Bonnie Lynn, Gerald and Charles via video. Thanks to Roland, Ida and Kenneth aboard the Courtney Pride. We stayed at Mine and Hers up on the hill. Very nice, clean and comfortable. It is a very beautiful spot to visit.

There’s a feeling in the air. A sense of solitude that brings you back to a simpler time. Francois is friendly people. Pristine nature. Challenging hikes. Leisurely walks. It was everything I didn’t know I needed.

  • A scenic coastal village scene with colorful houses on the hillside, calm water in a narrow fjord, mountains on either side, and a cloudy sky.

Everyone should make the trip to Francois. Our family of 4 along with our young Bernese Mountain Dog went back in August 2022. It was like going back in time. We stayed for 2 nights. This picture would make anyone want to go.

I first visited Francois with my ACW church group but returned in 2022 with my friends on a staycation. We hiked the many trails including Charlie’s Head, Cook’s Hole Cave and The Friar. A side trip to MacCallum and Hermitage was a highlight which rejuvenated body and soul.

My husband, myself and another couple traveled to Francois in July 2021, staying for 2 nights.  No vehicles except for quads, just wooden & concrete boardwalks.  A gorgeous isolated community on the Southwest Coast.  It was so peaceful and quiet.  While there we did some hiking to the waterfall, the cave, Charlie's Lookout and the Friar.  Spectacular views at every turn.  Francois is a definite must for hiking or just to relax and enjoy the quiet.

I travelled to Francois a couple of years ago with a few friends. We stayed 2 nights at a lovely rental property. We hiked the friar trail and saw the beautiful view of Francois from high above the town. A very nice man named George took us in his boat to neighbouring Chaleur bay, a location with a beautiful beach, cabins and a site of a salmon farm operation. The day was just lovely. George’s wife made cookies for us and George let me drive the boat back. The town residents were very nice and we had a beautiful stay. I would like to go back one day.

We visited Burgeo a few years ago hoping to get to Francois. By chance, we met the ferry captain and learned our only opportunity to go was leaving in half an hour — so we took it.

Midway through the trip, we realized we hadn’t booked accommodations or brought supplies, but the captain kindly helped arrange both before we arrived.

We spent the evening exploring this unique and beautiful community and enjoyed every moment of our stay.

Our visit to François, NL was truly one of the most unique and memorable experiences we’ve ever had. Getting there is an adventure in itself — the ferry ride is long and a little rough at times — but it’s absolutely worth it once you arrive. As soon as the ferry pulled in, many of the locals came down to the wharf to greet us. That alone tells you the kind of place François is. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming.

One of the highlights of our trip was when Perry Baggs got us lobster fresh out of the water. We cooked it right on the beach in front of our Airbnb and shared an unforgettable meal with the ocean just steps away. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

We spent our time hiking all the trails around the community. They’re all beautiful, but the Friar was definitely our favorite. The views from there are incredible. For a little extra adventure, we took the rope route down the other side on the way back, which made the hike even more exciting.

Another amazing moment was meeting a young French couple who were camping in a tent by the church. It was raining so hard that evening, so we invited them to stay with us for the night and share our lobster. It turned into such a special experience — great conversation, great food, and the kind of memory that makes travel so meaningful.

The kindness of the people in François really stood out to us. At one point we needed a few things and the lady from the store even went in on a Sunday to open up and let us buy what we needed. That level of hospitality is rare and speaks volumes about this community.

François is more than just a beautiful place — it’s an experience. The scenery, the trails, the ocean, and especially the people make it unforgettable. If you ever get the chance to visit, take it. The journey may be long, but the memories you make there will last a lifetime.

Francois …. A must have on your bucket list:

My husband, 7-year-old grandson, cousin, and I went on a Staycation to Francois in 2022. We stayed at a beautiful rental (Mine and Hers) overlooking the water. On our first morning there, our grandson went out on the deck and could barely contain his excitement at seeing a cruise ship in the harbour. His first comment was,” wow, you guys must have brought me to a really popular place if cruise ships come here too.”

Visiting Francois is like stepping back in time. Walking along the concrete pathways and many wooden boardwalks gives one an excellent tour of the entire community. I was delighted to see a number of outstanding flower gardens there (being a gardener). Had a grand conversation with one of the residents who told me the history of his garden.

My cousin and I are avid hikers and this was primarily the reason we planned the trip. That along with the fact that I had made a lot of working trips to the community but never had the time to be a tourist.

Hiking the Friar was the highlight of my trip. The breathtaking views of Francois and the harbour at the top of the Friar, will forever be etched in my brain. Needless to say, we took many, many photographs. A photographer’s paradise.

An early evening hike to Charlie’s Lookout was the perfect ending to our day. It is a mostly wooden lookout that overlooks the town, the ocean and the fiords.

One of my grandson’s favourite outings was to the Cave. Of course, being 8 he wanted to climb all the way in. Took us some time to get to the entryway as he wanted to keep turning around to check out the views and what views they were.

My cousin is big into ancestry so seeing a well-maintained cemetery and checking out all the headstone names added much delight to his trip.

Geocaching is a hobby of mine and so I was happy to be able to log one at the top of the Friar (side road). The geocache actually led us to the road which we would have probably walked past.

I also am a plant enthusiast and made good use of my Seek app to identify many of the species of plants there.

    The Staycation of a lifetime.
